Expanding Horizons

~ artwork ~

I was quite excited to come across Art 634 in Jackson, MI a month or so ago. As someone who writes poetry and enjoys making all kinds of artistry, I found their 3-part exhibition series quite intriguing …

“The Power of Words: A Transformative Art Series,” a collection of group art exhibitions at Art 634 in Jackson, MI that explores the profound impact of language and how even small changes in words can shape our perceptions, experiences, and artistic interpretations.

The first exhibition, Expanding Horizons: An Exploration of Space, runs through June 1. The show invites you to explore various interpretations of “space,” from the vastness of the cosmos to personal, emotional, and social spaces. Featuring works that capture the universe’s grandeur, the sanctuary of personal environments, and the power of creative and cultural spaces, Expanding Horizons invites reflection on how we inhabit and navigate these realms.

I worked on my submissions and met the deadline the day they were due. I tend to be more proactive than that, but I was a bit late to finding this opportunity. Either way, I’m excited to say both sets of photography + poetry artworks were accepted into the exhibition. I appreciate Art 634 for this opportunity!

Poem: “The Great Expanse”

Artist Statement: Where the water and wind meet the shore and sun, that’s where I feel most at home. This photograph was made at Tunnel Park in Holland, MI. I love the flares that can be naturally created by light hitting the lens when shooting photography. This flare is so perfectly caught it appears as a doorway leading into another dimension, the Sunset Dimension. What might await as we enter “the great expanse”?

The Great Expanse

Deeper and deeper, wider and wider
higher and higher, closer and closer.

Oneness is infinite—eternal and true;
this is reality of me in You.

All is One and all will see
given no time in eternity.

Space is vast, realms await;
do you believe in such a fate?

The story written for us to grow;
the response needed—learn to let go.

It’s in the surrender truth does arise
for he who is willing to open his eyes.

See past the forms touchable with hands;
sense the invisible of all that expands.

Poem: “The Space Between”

Artist Statement: The beach has always been a place of great respite for me. This photograph was made in Holland, MI at Tunnel Park. Colors softly fading as the sun was setting provided a most peaceful atmosphere. The still waters resting at the base of the image connected to the clouds high above by “the space between” providing a sense of great Possibilities.

The Space Between

high in the sky
birds gather
clouds dance
the sun warms my soul

closing my eyes
I float to the party
gathering
in the space between

immense power covers me
melting into the expanse of unity
soaking up the beauty
of the unseen
