Crumpled Piles

I don’t know who I’d be

without the pain that came for me
don’t get me wrong, it defines me not
but the pain I faced it was my lot

I now stand upon the crumpled piles
that tried so hard to keep me down
from shifting sand to solid rock
a new perspective I have found

when you say to pain “what can you teach me?”
instead of resisting its clenching grip
you learn and grow becoming wiser
and that is when it starts to slip

into oblivion, its power fading
no more allowance for masquerading
dissipating like a vapor

into nothing, where it belongs
