The Mirror

“I’m furious! This was forced upon me.”
Look in the mirror.

“I’m angry! This was forced upon me.”
Look in the mirror.

“I’m disappointed! This was forced upon me.”
Look in the mirror.

Reluctantly, I obey.
Locking eyes with my reflection,
I can see.

I’m tired of carrying so much weight;
burdened by loss, sadness, despair.

Like a veil lifting from my eyes,

I slowly realize.

I’ve been clinging tight
to that which I have no right;

my soul feeling entitled to possession.

To re-lease, I must let go.
Even in the midst of these emotions.
Even in the midst of still missing her.

By looking in the mirror and locking with my own eyes,
I’m able to understand myself more deeply.
My suffering, for this moment, lifts.

When I look kindly within myself,

I see the depths of that which entraps.

I’m not angry; I’m burdened.
And I hold the key;
for it has been given to me.

“Take my yoke upon you for it is light,”
Jesus said “and learn from me.”

In my surrender to God, I have a release;

the broken pieces can be put back together,

my brokenness healed through my faith.

A reformation, a re-forming,
back into the whole; readily available
when I let it all go.

As the re-lease lightens my load,

it brightens my road.

How beneficial to look in the mirror
and come face-to-face with truth.

This was a poem I wrote after my book (Beauty of the Slow Drip) went to print. I found it recently in some loose papers, and it seemed fitting to share. A reminder that the journey of loss and healing is a process, not a one-and-done thing.

I have continued to grow even deeper and wider into my oneness with God over the past two and a half years. The journey of wholeness through oneness proving itself to be an everlasting and beautiful ride. New possibilities unfolding each day I seek God and The Way.

Whatever you’re going through in this season, may you remember the journey is a gift.
