Concept is king

~ inspiration is everywhere ~

Fountain is a readymade sculpture by Marcel Duchamp in 1917, consisting of a porcelain urinal signed “R. Mutt” (wiki).

What a beautiful sculpture!

Oh, you don’t agree?

Well, maybe if you knew the full story. Click here for wiki’s version (for what it’s worth).

Summary: “Duchamp described his intent with the piece was to shift the focus of art from physical craft to intellectual interpretation.”

As is said “concept is king.” And I very much agree!

The spicier story I originally heard was that he was “fed up” with the “high and mighty” intellectuals of the time who were placing more value on prestige and connections than concept and imagination. Knowing that, I’m sure you can imagine what a urinal represents when submitted as a work of art.

He was a founding member of the Society of Independent Artists and this first annual exhibition was to be open to all who paid a $6 membership and entry fee, specifically geared toward avant-garde works of art. Upon refusal to show this work (which qualified to be shown), he resigned from the committee.

Looks like censorship has always been a controlling mechanism for the power-hungry elite. Duchamp did well highlighting this in his day; may we continue doing so in ours.

I’m thankful for the risk-takers who won’t conform. Those who stay true to their own path. Welcoming the unknown. Believing in freedom. And bettering our world as they do so.

How boring life would be without exploration and innovation.

Photo+graphic Art: the butterfly was photographed at Fort Worth Botanical Gardens and the graffiti wall on the west side of FW Stockyards, in the abandoned Swift Armour Meat Packing Plant (fun fact – this old industrial complex was the setting of Penitenciaría Federal de Sona in season 3 of Prison Break – they’ve since been torn down).

Have you ever needed to defy ill-authority for good reason?

If not, would you?
