Things we learn along the way

~ inspiration is everywhere ~

Calligrams: Poems of Peace from War, is a collection of poems by Guillaume Apollinaire (1918).

Funny thing is, I wrote a poem a few years back that I thought would be perfect to typographically form into a train (check the poem out here – Word Train). I just haven’t yet done it.

When I came across these works, it connected. Probably planted in my mind in design school, and I since forgot. Memory can work that way. Hiding in the recesses of the mind until the time is right. Then we think it was our original idea, or an epiphany, when it was likely supplanted years ago. Tho, I don’t want to negate revelation.

I had shared a poem of his recently; one that I love …

Come To The Edge

“Come to the edge,” he said.
“We can’t; we’re afraid!” they responded.
“Come to the edge,” he said.
“We can’t; we will fall!” they responded.
“Come to the edge,” he said.
And so they came.
And he pushed them.
.
.
.
And
they
flew.

Ah, that poem is exhilarating—as if I had been the one pushed off the edge and am now in flight; yes, it’s time to …

“Soar”

… was a photograph I took summer 2019, when I moved to NYC (I have since moved away). But it seems fitting to share with this poem.

As I was learning more about Apollinaire …

I discovered he was friends with Marcel Duchamp. No surprise. They both had an unorthodox approach which pulls me like a magnet. I’ll save my reasons for appreciating Duchamp for another post, at a later time.

QUESTION:

who/what inspires you?

  1. I sometimes use visual forms in poetry, although platforms such as WordPress and Medium seem to hate the use of any empty spaces.

The alternative, I guess, is to post such poems as images, and to ensure that alt text is utilized (as I always do).

    1. Cool stuff. Yeah, that sounds like a good workaround 🙌
